UK tests AI camera system to detect... drivers using alcohol and drugs

DNVN - In the UK, a smart camera system integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) is being tested with the aim of detecting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to the manufacturer, this is the first time in the world that this advanced camera technology has been tested.

Developed by Australian-based road safety company Acusensus, the system can detect drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The data collected is immediately transmitted to police in nearby areas, who can stop the vehicle and conduct necessary checks on the driver.

The AI-powered camera system is being trialled in Cornwall and Devon in December. It works on a mobile phone and seatbelt-based technology platform and can be moved to different locations across the area.

The flexible nature of this camera system allows it to be deployed to any route without prior notice, making it difficult for drivers to realize they are being monitored until they are stopped by police.

Acusensus has previously developed technologies to help police detect drivers using mobile phones while driving or not wearing seat belts.

"We would be safer if we could detect drunk and drugged drivers before they caused an accident that could ruin someone else's life," said Geoff Collins, head of Acusensus UK.
