Binh Lieu District, Quang Ninh Province, is the locality with the highest illiteracy rate in Quang Ninh Province. Implementing Directive 10-CT/TW dated December 5, 2011 of the Politburo on "Universalizing preschool education for 5-year-old children, consolidating the results of universalizing primary and secondary education, enhancing the division of students after secondary school and eliminating illiteracy for adults", in recent times, the district has paid great attention to the work of eliminating illiteracy for the people. Regularly from Monday to Saturday every week, after hours of working in the fields, in the evening, people in the villages and hamlets in the highlands of Binh Lieu invite each other to go to the cultural house to learn to read and write. The "light" from the Party's policy, from the special classes where teachers have diligently sowed letters in the highlands here is helping people to read and write fluently, lighting up opportunities to change their lives...
Having access to the “light” of words, the appearance of the highland villages and hamlets of the mountainous and border district of Binh Lieu is changing day by day. Photo of Cam Hac village, Dong Van commune (Binh Lieu district).
From these policies, Vietnam.vn would like to introduce to you the photo collection “Light from literacy classes in the border area” by author Pham Cuong. The author went to the border area of Binh Lieu to record the work of teachers who bring light to the calves there every day. The photo collection was submitted by the author to the Photo and Video Contest of Happy Vietnam, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications.
After hours of working in the fields and preparing meals, in the evening, Duong Nhi Mui's family (sitting) takes the opportunity to go to the cultural house of Cam Hac village, Dong Van commune, to learn to read and write.
From 8pm, the weather in the highlands is cold, the terrain is complex, the roads are difficult and arduous, but mothers and women of the Dao ethnic group in Cam Hac village still invite each other to go to the literacy class to learn to read and write. Cam Hac village is one of the most difficult villages, bordering Vietnam and China, currently has 63 households, more than 200 people. In the village, there are nearly 20 people who are illiterate.
At first, the Cam Hac village literacy class had only a few students, but later the number increased to 15. Most of the students studying literacy were between 30 and 60 years old.
Teacher Truong Thi Nga, Dong Van Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, shared: Many Dao ethnic women have young children but still try to arrange housework, determined to go to class to learn. Up to now, after nearly 5 months of persistent study, many women have learned to read, write, calculate, text on the phone...
Ms. Tang Tai Mui (right in photo) is 60 years old, but still meticulously determined to learn to read and write.
From 2011 to present, Binh Lieu district has opened 111 literacy classes, granting certificates of completion of the literacy program to 1,744 students. In 2023 alone, Binh Lieu district will open 10 literacy classes for 200 students. Photo taken at the literacy class in Phai Lau village, Dong Van commune.
Teacher Lo Thi Thu, Dong Van Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, said: Many students are old, have poor eyesight, stiff hands, have difficulty writing, and cannot pronounce clearly, but they try very hard, are diligent, and make progress every day.
The calloused hands, used only to holding hoes and planting corn, now hold pens to practice writing, not yet perfect, but everyone is diligently trying to learn the letters...
To bring the Party's policies to people in remote areas, despite being busy, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Cam Hac Village, Chiu Thi Ngan, still goes to class every day to help teachers translate and teach Vietnamese to people in the village.
Along with teaching, teachers and cadres of Dong Van commune also skillfully combine propaganda for women about the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws, hygienic living conditions, and the elimination of backward customs.
Ms. Duong Nhi Mui (on the left of the photo) happily said: “Up until now, I only knew how to go to the forest, clear the fields, and work on the fields, but I was not familiar with holding a pen or a book. Learning to read and write was very difficult, but since the day the teacher came to teach me, I have learned to read, write, add, subtract, and calculate, boldly investing in economic development to escape poverty. This is the greatest joy and expectation in my life…”.
Up to now, many women in Cam Hac village can read, write, calculate, and text on the phone.
