US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that on September 13, US President Joe Biden will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss allowing Ukrainian forces to attack deep into Russia with long-range weapons provided by these countries.
At a press conference with British Foreign Secretary David Lemmy, Mr. Blinken accused Iran of supplying ballistic missiles to Russia and said the US would punish Tehran for this. Previously, Russia and Iran have repeatedly denied this information.
Mr. Blinken and his counterpart Lemmy made a joint visit to Kiev, Ukraine on September 11.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has repeatedly called on the West to untie Kiev's arms to attack deep into Russian territory.
"We consider strikes deep into Russian territory with US weapons to be no more provocative than strikes with US weapons on Russian territory near the border. Both are Russian territory and there is no difference between the targets no matter how deep they are," a Ukrainian lawmaker told CNN of Kiev's position.
However, the US and the West are still hesitant to respond to Ukraine's call, due to concerns that it will escalate tensions with Russia, one of the leading nuclear powers.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that no single weapon, including long-range missiles, can change the outcome of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Meanwhile, Moscow warned of consequences if Ukraine fired long-range weapons supplied by the West into Russian territory.
The United States will be directly affected if its plans to escalate the Ukraine conflict come true, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said.
Mr Antonov said the potential escalation would not be limited to continental Europe if Western long-range weapons were fired at Russian territory.
"Washington's idea of pitting Europe against Russia through the Ukraine crisis will not come true. The US will not be able to sit on the sidelines if the current situation escalates into a global conflict," Antonov said.
