Hero Pham Tuan was the first Vietnamese and Asian person to fly into space in 1980. Before that, in 1977, Pham Tuan was sent to the Soviet Union to study at the Gagarin Air Force Academy. In 1979, when selecting astronauts, the Soviet side tested all Vietnamese pilots and engineers but could only choose 3 people because they had to pass difficult physical tests.
Later, poet To Huu, in his work A Branch of Spring, had some very proud verses: "Isn't it strange/ We live here, suffering day and night/ But still think we're flying in our dreams/ Meals of potatoes, little fish, lots of vegetables/ But we block rivers to make electricity, drill the sea to make oil/ Wear tire sandals/ And board a spaceship...".
Regarding this event, poet Hong Thanh Quang wrote in an article: "In July 1980, Pham Tuan and Soviet cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko flew into space on the Soyuz spacecraft from Baikonur airport (now in the Republic of Kazakhstan). He carried out his mission until July 31 before returning, after 142 orbits around the earth. During his entire time in orbit, Pham Tuan conducted many scientific experiments. He also took photos of Vietnam from earth orbit. With this achievement, in 1980, he was awarded the title of Hero of Labor of Vietnam, along with the Ho Chi Minh Medal. At that time, Lieutenant Colonel Pham Tuan was 33 years old. And also in 1980, Pham Tuan was honored to become one of the first foreigners to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, along with the Lenin Medal".
