On September 26, brothers Ly Minh Triet and Ly Minh Tan together defeated the pair Jih Shian Yeo (Singapore)/Yeong Ding Hwang (Taiwan) with a score of 21/12 to excellently win the 50+ Open championship (for athletes aged 50 and over).

This is an extremely impressive and convincing achievement, when at the World Pickleball Championship Series 2024 held in Bali (Indonesia), the Ly brothers had an all-win record, including 2 clean wins of 11/0 and 2 wins with a score difference of 11/1.

In the quarter-finals, the two former Vietnamese table tennis players defeated the Indonesian pair Rudy Gusnadi/Joni Marhenriyanto with a score of 15/2, before passing the semi-finals with a score of 15-8 against the home players Edy Kurniawan/Igusti Ngurah.

Previously, two veteran athletes Ly Minh Triet and Le Minh shocked everyone when they won the gold medal in the 35+ Open category (35 years old and above). This is a very impressive achievement considering that Minh Triet had just returned from an injury and still had to compete with his knees bent.

The former player who helped the Vietnamese table tennis team win the first silver medal at the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai (Thailand) said: "We are very happy to have a successful tournament, bringing gold medals and glory to the Vietnamese flag.

In particular, the gold medal in the 35+ Open category was really unexpected, because at first we encouraged each other to try to participate because we had to compete with opponents who were nearly 20 years old.

Today, Minh Tan and I, two brothers, are very happy to have won the 50+ Open event together. Especially in the final, we overcame the athlete who had the highest score in Asia, Jih Shian Yeo.

I highly appreciate the management of the tournament in Bali, which was very professional, clear, and punctual. The referees were very accurate and had a very polite and fair attitude. Through this tournament, we, the athletes, learned a lot of useful things."

Mr. Ly Minh Tan said: "The referees at the World Pickleball Championship were very good. In the final match, we were tied with our opponents at 10/10, then suddenly Triet and I changed our playing style and scored 5 points in a row. Realizing that the other side of the field was a bit tense, we attacked strongly and ended the match with a score of 21/12.

The journey in this tournament shows that in the 50+ Open category, Vietnam is not afraid of anyone. In most of the matches, we ended with outstanding scores, thanks to promoting the strengths of quick reflexes and agility of the Vietnamese people."

This was a very successful tournament for the Amakirk Vietnam team when all 5 athletes won valuable medals. In addition to 2 gold medals in the 35+ Open and 50+ Open categories, the Amakirk Vietnam team also won a silver medal in the 19+ (4.5) category by Le Minh/Le Tho and a silver medal by Nguyen Minh Thao in the 35+ (4.5) category.

Brothers Ly Minh Triet and Ly Minh Tan are both members of the Professional Council of the 1st Pickleball Youth Tournament - 2024 VINFAST Cup held at La Piko Stadium (Lan Anh Club) last July, with 250 matches and 310 athletes participating.

The World Pickleball Championship (WPC) is the first $100,000 cash prize tournament in pickleball history, held in Punta Gorda (Florida, USA) in December 2019. Based on the 2019 GPR (Global Pickleball Ranking), this is the last invitational tournament of the year with only the top 16 players invited to participate.

The WPC then evolved into the WPC Series, which has connected the world's best players of the past with the best players of today living outside the US, through a series of 12 tournaments in the Asia Pacific (8 in Asia and 4 in Australia) including Vietnam, Korea, China, India, Oceania, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Sydney...

All players will receive GPR ranking points at each event they participate in. Players who participate at skill level 5.0 will receive ranking points as well as a ranking called "Race to Carmelia" which will give the top 20 players/teams the opportunity to automatically qualify for the finals which will be held from 14-19.1.2025 at Carmelina Beach Resort in Vietnam.
