(CLO) An image of Elon Musk's controversial salute during his speech on January 20 was projected onto Tesla's Gigafactory in Berlin. The screen displayed Musk's gesture along with the words "Heil Tesla" - a term that is associated with Nazi Germany.
The incident occurred after Musk made a chest-clapping gesture, then extended his arm with his palm facing down, during a speech at the "Presidential Parade" in Washington, which took place shortly after Donald Trump's second inauguration.
Musk denied the accusations, saying people should not overanalyze his actions. In a response on X, Musk described his gesture as a joke and criticized those who attacked him for it.

Two activist groups, Led By Donkeys (UK) and the Center for Political Beauty (Germany), admitted to projecting the image on the Gigafactory. In addition to the words "Heil Tesla", another message with the word "Boycott" next to the Tesla logo was also projected.
Led By Donkeys is known for its creative advocacy that exposes political hypocrisy, while the Center for Political Beauty, founded in 2009, focuses on social issues such as refugee rights and fascism.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said Musk's gesture may have been an awkward moment of excitement, and urged people to be more lenient in their judgment. However, Kurt Braddock, a professor at American University, warned of a positive reaction from far-right and neo-Nazi groups to the move.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk is set to become more deeply involved in the Trump administration as head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is expected to create more controversy in the future.
