Quick lunch box in the driver's seat
At 11:30 am, the sun was shining straight down from the sky, the heat was radiating from the asphalt concrete under the road surface. The air at the construction site of the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway, passing through Dien Tho commune, Dien Chau district, Nghe An province, was as hot as a furnace.
Workers operating carpet spreading machines of Hoa Hiep Company take advantage of the opportunity to eat lunch right in the driver's seat.
However, the workers of Hoa Hiep Company Limited still stuck to the construction site, speeding up the construction progress. In this contract, Hoa Hiep has paved nearly 2km of layer 3 asphalt concrete (the last layer) on a total of 3.8km.
Despite the heat and sun, Nguyen Duc Tuan, a worker driving a paving machine for Hoa Hiep Company, took advantage of the time before the asphalt truck arrived to eat a delicious lunch box right in the driver's seat.
Behind, the workers operating the road roller were still working hard to ensure the tightness of the asphalt concrete. Next to them, Ms. Vi Thi Binh (born in 1990, a timekeeping worker) took the opportunity to rest her head and take a nap.
“I’m used to it, man! Even in this hot weather, I can still eat. The plastic mats are very special, if I stop, I’ll drag a train along with me,” Tuan said with a laugh.
Mr. Tuan has been working for Hoa Hiep for 15 years now, his main job is to drive a carpet spreading machine. According to Mr. Tuan, the job of driving a carpet spreading machine is quite unique, when the weather is unfavorable, rainy or windy, he sits around all day. However, when it comes to construction, he works all day and all night, even for several days in a row.
According to worker Nguyen Duc Tuan, eating on the go has become a biological rhythm for carpet spreading machine operators.
“Once a batch of asphalt concrete has been baked, it must be constructed immediately and continuously until it is finished. The purpose is to achieve the best temperature conditions for the asphalt concrete when it is laid.
In addition, when the paving machine stops, it will pull a “train” before and after it (such as asphalt concrete station, asphalt transport vehicle, compaction machines, etc.) to stop as well.
With such a unique nature, plus being a national key project, the pressure on progress is very high, so it is very normal for asphalt concrete workers to have to work all day long. In the days before the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, there were batches of workers who worked continuously for 2 days before taking a break," said Mr. Tuan, adding:
“That is why eating lunch boxes right on the steering wheel and taking 5-10 minute naps have become habits and indispensable biological rhythms of carpet workers.”
Hearing that, Nguyen Phung Dat (born in 2002, also a carpet spreading machine operator) added: Carpet workers have a harder time than other workers because of the separate working environment.
Worker Vi Thi Binh took a break after finishing her meal.
Dat shared: Only on sunny days can asphalt be laid, because before construction, the road surface must be cleaned, and asphalt concrete is very water-resistant. In winter, the low outdoor temperature is bearable, but in summer, the sun is scorching, plus the heat from the asphalt concrete radiates like a furnace. Yet, the brothers still have to stay at the construction site day and night.
It turns out that Dat is from Thanh Chuong. After completing his military service, he worked as a road and bridge construction worker for a year. The previous project he worked on was the Nghi Son - Dien Chau highway.
Working in 3 shifts and 4 crews, the construction site is filled with the sound of machines.
According to the reporter's records, in other bidding packages, thousands of officers, engineers, and workers of the companies: Truong Son Corps, Cienco 4, Dai Hiep, Hoa Hiep, Thai Yen, 456... are also racing against time to complete the project according to the proposed plan.
Leaders of Truong Son Branch 28 encouraged workers to "eat quickly and sleep quickly" to construct Than Vu 2 Bridge day and night.
The project enterprise has also disbursed VND5,925 billion for the project. Of which, VGF capital is VND2,581 billion, equity capital is VND1,266 billion, and loan capital is VND2,077 billion.
In particular, focus on completing the section from the beginning of the route (intersection with National Highway 7, Dien Chau district) to the intersection with National Highway 46B (Hung Tay commune, Hung Nguyen district) by April 30, as directed by the Prime Minister.
Specifically, in package XL02, Truong Son Construction Corporation constructed 5.425km (of which 2.79km had to be treated for weak soil) and bridges: N5 overpass, QL48E overpass, Than Vu 2 bridge, O O bridge, Nghi My bridge.
According to the approved plan, the contractor has so far deployed 22 construction teams, mobilizing 168 pieces of machinery and equipment with nearly 370 people. The Truong Son Corps has now completed an output value of up to 1,086.1/1,289.6 billion VND, reaching 84.2%.
Specifically, for roads, up to now, 100% of soft soil treatment has been completed, 100% of crushed stone grade 2 has been completed, 57.7% of crushed stone grade 1 has been completed, 64.9% of cement reinforced concrete has been completed, and 57.6% of R25 asphalt concrete has been completed. For bridge projects, bored piles, piers, and beam casting have all been completed, and 86.8% of bridge beam installation has been completed...
Engineers and workers of Hoa Hiep Company Ltd. had a quick meal in Than Vu tunnel.
Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Cong Thang - Director of Enterprise 28.3, Truong Son Branch 28, Truong Son Construction Corporation, Commander of Than Vu 2 Bridge project said: Than Vu 2 Bridge is 1,287m long, up to now the unit has installed 30/32 Super T girder spans and is speeding up the construction of the last 2 spans.
In parallel with the girder lofting, the unit also urgently constructed the bridge deck. For the steel weaving and concrete pouring, the unit organized 3 shifts, working 24/7 without rest. It is expected that on April 20, Than Vu 2 Bridge will be completed, 10 days ahead of schedule.
With the XL03 package from National Highway 7 to National Highway 46B, Cienco 4 Group constructed 567m of the left branch of Than Vu tunnel and 2.3km of the main line north of the tunnel. Although the left branch of Than Vu tunnel has not been put into use, up to now Cienco 4 has dug, reinforced, installed 100% of anchors, and poured concrete for the tunnel lining for 363/567m, reaching 65.2%. As for the road, up to now, the concrete top layer (last layer) has been constructed for 2.1/2.3km.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Executive Director of XL-03 package, Cienco 4 Group said: Regarding the road, there are currently 200m through Xuan Duong hill that was previously protested by people for blasting, and is now under construction again. It is expected that by March 20, the roadbed excavation work will be completed to construct the road surface foundation. In parallel with the construction of the main items, Cienco 4 has also deployed the construction of guardrail systems, hard dividers, etc. to complete the project before April 30.
Meanwhile, Hoa Hiep Company Limited is constructing the right tunnel branch. To speed up the progress, this unit recently spent 1.8 billion VND to rent an additional set of scaffolding to pour concrete for the tunnel, bringing the total number of scaffolding to 3 sets. Currently, this company has constructed 717/1,131m of concrete for the tunnel lining. In parallel, this company has also deployed the construction of the drainage system, tunnel foundation and operating house...
“Since the first drill bit was placed, the Than Vu tunnel project has not had a single day of machine noise, including holidays and Tet. Officers, engineers, and workers eat right in the tunnel to speed up progress. Currently, the unit is still maintaining that spirit to complete the project on April 30 as directed by the Prime Minister,” said engineer Vo Son Hai, commander of the northern part of Than Vu tunnel of Hoa Hiep Company Limited.
Contractors are concentrating with the highest spirit, bringing the section from National Highway 7 to National Highway 46B to the finish line on April 30 as directed by the Prime Minister.
As for the XL04 package, according to the project's principle contract, it was undertaken by another contractor. However, some contractors later failed to carry out the construction as planned. Faced with this situation, Hoa Hiep Company took over the project to ensure the committed progress, with a total value of up to 850 billion VND.
Overcoming countless difficulties due to starting later, accepting to compensate tens of billions of dong in additional costs, even though the BOT contract is a lump sum contract, without any contingency.
Up to now, in the section from National Highway 7 to National Highway 46B, critical road projects such as Xuan Duong 2 Bridge and National Highway 46B intersection have basically met the schedule. In particular, Xuan Duong 2 Bridge is a level 1 bridge project, with the highest pillar on the entire route, up to more than 50m. After a year of construction, Hoa Hiep has recently closed the bridge.
Currently, this contractor is mobilizing all resources to complete the projects before April 30, in accordance with the Prime Minister's direction.
The project is implemented in the form of PPP, by a consortium of investors: Hoa Hiep Company Limited - CIENCO4 Group Joint Stock Company - Nui Hong Investment Company Limited - Truong Son Construction Corporation - VINA2 Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company; the project enterprise is Phuc Thanh Hung Investment Joint Stock Company.
According to the Prime Minister's direction, the section from the beginning of the route to National Highway 46B must be completed by April 30, 2024.
