Many families have been using turmeric as a daily spice in meals, but not everyone knows the following wonderful uses of turmeric for health, especially for the brain.
Turmeric has the effect of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, stabilizing the heart rate, preventing blood clots and reducing sugar or bad fats in the blood. In addition, this popular root also has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces pain caused by arthritis, is an antioxidant, protects the stomach lining and even reduces the risk of cancer. Some studies have also shown that turmeric is effective in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Turmeric has many good uses, often used as a spice or processed with everyday dishes.
Support memory, prevent cancer
Specialist Doctor 1 Truong Le Luy Na, Deputy Head of the Department of Nutrition, Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HCMC) said that turmeric contains curcumin, which helps improve memory and is good for cognitive function in the elderly.
Even in adulthood, brain neurons are capable of forming new connections in certain areas of the brain, and they can proliferate and increase in number. One of the main drivers of this process is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays a role in memory and learning and can be found in areas of the brain responsible for eating and body weight.
Many common brain disorders are associated with reduced levels of the protein BDNF, including depression and Alzheimer's disease. Studies have found that curcumin in turmeric can increase BDNF levels, effectively delaying or even reversing the progression of many brain diseases as well as age-related decline in brain function, according to the health website Healthline (USA).
Additionally, many different types of cancer appear to be affected by curcumin supplements. In fact, curcumin has been studied as a beneficial herb in cancer treatment. Studies have shown that it may contribute to the death of cancer cells; reduce angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels in tumors); and reduce metastasis.
There is also evidence that curcumin can prevent cancer from occurring in the first place, especially digestive system cancers such as colorectal cancer. In particular, information from Healthline suggests that it is more useful to combine turmeric with black pepper because pepper contains piperine, a natural substance that helps increase the absorption of curcumin found in turmeric.
Doctor Luy Na advises: If not treating any special disease, people should use turmeric as a common spice, avoid using too much on their own because it can cause many disadvantages to health.
People with anemia or taking medication should be careful when eating turmeric.
Doctor Luy Na recommends that people with anemia should limit their intake of turmeric because curcumin in turmeric can bind to iron, hinder iron absorption, and worsen anemia. Turmeric can also interact with other drugs such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Be careful or consult your doctor when using turmeric with the above drugs.
“If there are no special diseases, people should use turmeric in the same amount as a daily spice. Currently, there is no official consensus on the effective dosage of turmeric or curcumin. Users can refer to the amount of fresh turmeric that can be used each day, ranging from 10 to 60 grams, and turmeric starch from about 1 to 10 grams, equivalent to half a spoon to a teaspoon. In addition, if using turmeric to support the treatment of bones and joints or stomach diseases, patients can consult a doctor to ensure safety,” Dr. Luy Na emphasized.
Using turmeric in large amounts for a long time can cause adverse effects such as bloating, flatulence, indigestion, constipation, intestinal obstruction, increased liver enzymes... Therefore, it is necessary to eat turmeric in moderation to not harm the user's health.
