With restaurants springing up everywhere, Indian cuisine is increasingly establishing itself in Poland, a popular way to "travel" to the world's most populous country.

Indian cuisine once again became the focus as Poland warmly welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit from August 21-22. This was the first visit by an Indian head of government to this Central European country in 45 years.

According to data from the Indian Embassy in Poland, there are more than 45 Indian restaurants serving traditional dishes throughout the country, mostly concentrated in the capital Warsaw.

In Warsaw, Chetan Nandani, a Gujarat (Indian) businessman who runs Curry House, recently opened a new restaurant called Chaiwala to meet the growing demand for Indian cuisine . Nandani hopes to spread Indian street food to all residents of the capital.

According to Mr. Nandani, many Poles who visit India and explore famous cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata seem to have overlooked the street food scene. The name Chaiwala evokes the image of tea vendors on the streets, a part of Indian culture. Mr. Nandani named his new restaurant this way as a tribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who himself was a tea vendor in Gujarat.

Mr. Nandani shared that, in addition to the growing chain of 9 Curry House restaurants in Poland, Chaiwala's mission is to bring some Indian street food closer to the people here.

According to Indian restaurant owners, Poles are not only fascinated by India's rich cuisine but also interested in the unique and diverse culture of this land of Buddhist origin.

Anna Maria Rozek, a Polish citizen, said she really loves dosa, a traditional Indian dish.

“The best dosa is at India Gate restaurant; it feels like you're enjoying it in South India. I've traveled to Chennai and Kerala many times, and I'm sure the food here tastes the same,” Rozek asserted.

According to Mr. Chandu, owner of the India Gate restaurant chain, “the food here is really delicious... Indian food has a lot of spices. Each dish has a different flavor...", Poles like dishes such as butter chicken and mango lassi. "They love Indian cuisine as well as the Indian people."

Poles also have a great fondness for Indian culture, and in fact, Indian cinema is currently very popular in the country, Chandu affirmed.

Indian restaurants are popular not only in the capital Warsaw, but also in cities like Krakow and Wroclaw, offering a wide variety of choices for food connoisseurs in the country. Mr. Nandani believes that the demand for Indian street food will continue to grow in Poland in the near future.

The Indian community in the Polish capital is very excited about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. According to Gaurav Singh, President of the Indian Student Association in Poland, people here are extremely looking forward to the visit, especially the young people and students. The Indian community here is growing, with the majority being international students.

Mr. Surender Kumar, an Indian citizen, said that his compatriots were all very happy to welcome the leader on his visit. Within the community, those from Gujarat felt even more proud.

According to Srikant, “I am from Gujarat and Prime Minister Modi is also from Gujarat. So we were even more excited to meet him.” Interestingly, the first Prime Minister from Gujarat to visit Poland was Morarji Desai, and now it's Modi. “I am extremely proud,” Srikant shared.

Indian Ambassador to Poland Nagma Mohamed Mallick affirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Poland helped to enhance mutual understanding in economic and other potential areas between the two countries.
