In Warsaw, Chetan Nandani, a Gujarati businessman who runs Curry House, recently opened a new restaurant called Chaiwala to meet the growing demand for Indian cuisine. Nandani hopes to spread Indian street food to the people of the capital.

According to Mr. Nandani, many Poles who visit India and visit famous cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata seem to have forgotten the street food scene. The name Chaiwala evokes the image of tea vendors on the streets that have become a part of Indian culture. Mr. Nandani named the new restaurant as a tribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was himself a tea vendor in Gujarat.

Mr. Nandani shared that, besides the chain of 9 Curry House restaurants gradually growing in Poland, Chaiwala's mission is to connect some Indian street foods closer to the people here.

According to Indian restaurant owners, Polish people are not only fascinated by the rich cuisine of India but are also interested in the unique and diverse culture of this land of Buddhist origin.

Ms. Anna Maria Rozek - a Polish citizen said that she really loves Dosa - a traditional Indian dish.

“The best dosa is at India Gate, it feels like you are in South India. I have travelled to Chennai and Kerala many times, the food here definitely tastes like that,” Ms. Rozek affirmed.

According to Mr. Chandu, owner of the India Gate restaurant chain, “the food here is really delicious... Indian food has a lot of spices. Each dish has a different flavor...”, Polish people love dishes such as butter chicken and mango lassi. "They love Indian cuisine as well as Indian people".

Poles are also very fond of Indian culture and in fact, Indian cinema is very popular in the country today, Mr. Chandu asserted.

Not only in Warsaw, Indian restaurants are also popular in cities like Krakow and Wroclaw, offering a wide range of options for foodies in this country. Mr. Nandani believes that the demand for Indian street food will become more popular in the coming time in Poland.
