TPO - In addition to their special political mission, the border guards of Hon Chuoi Island are also connected by an invisible thread, which is the affection of the people. This helps the officers and soldiers overcome obstacles and difficulties to complete their missions.
Hon Chuoi Island, located in Song Doc Town, Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province, has very difficult living and traveling conditions. Currently, there is no medical station or national school system on the island for children to study. Therefore, the self-governing people's group has coordinated with officers and soldiers of Hon Chuoi Border Post to open a charity class to impart literacy to the children.
For many years, Major Tran Binh Phuc and his teammates have been diligently teaching the young citizens here. Mr. Phuc said that the number of students in the class each year ranges from 18 to 22. This year, the older students have moved to the mainland to continue their studies, so the class now has 12 students. To get to class, the children are taken by boat by their parents early in the morning, then have to "walk" up 375 steep, steep steps.
Mr. Phuc is the person who has been in the class the longest and has experienced many sad and happy stories. Mr. Phuc and the students here have also received much attention from leaders at all levels, from the border guards and the love and sharing of both material and spiritual things from the cadres and people from the mainland. Thanks to that, the charity class is increasingly complete and spacious, meeting the requirements of teaching and learning.

“The class still has many difficulties, and is different from other classes, but it is necessary to do so to ensure the program and duration so that later the students can move to the mainland to continue their studies,” Mr. Phuc shared, adding that, up to now, the Hon Chuoi border guards have basically overcome the difficulties, put teaching and learning into motion, and basically met the requirements of the mission.
Sweet fruit on the journey of sowing letters
Among the students mentored by Mr. Phuc, there is a student who is about to graduate from university. “Recently, he told me that at the end of his third year, he was evaluated as one of the students with the best achievements at school. I am very happy when the student reports on the achievements that the brothers at Hon Chuoi Border Post have tried and made efforts for many years,” Major Phuc shared, adding that the best thing is that when the students are successful, they will return to continue teaching the children in Hon Chuoi.
According to teacher Phuc, border guards are not real teachers, but due to their special duties, they participate in economic development and poverty reduction in border and island areas. The guards only participate in solving part of the problem of eliminating illiteracy for children.
“My wish and concern is that in the future Hon Chuoi will develop more like other rich islands in our country and have a good education system, so that children will have better learning conditions,” Mr. Phuc confided.
Major Phuc affirmed that as soldiers, in addition to their special political duties, they also have an invisible bond of affection for the people. This helps officers and soldiers overcome all obstacles and difficulties to complete their tasks.
Every morning, Nguyen Thi Thi takes her child, Nguyen Minh Hien (a first grader), on a ferry and "walks" nearly 400 steps to get to class. This is the second year this mother has accompanied her child on the journey to find knowledge. She said that the two of them are used to walking all the time so they are not tired. The children here are the same, they are very eager to go to school. They only skip class when it rains heavily, but when it rains lightly, they still try to go to class. "Teacher Phuc is strict with the children and also often shares and encourages families to help them," said Thi.
Outside of class time, children gather around the children’s playground located opposite the classroom. This is a project built and completed by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and supporting groups over many years.
During a visit to encourage soldiers and people of islands and oil rigs in the southwestern sea of the country in mid-November, leaders of Ho Chi Minh City and delegates presented meaningful gifts to teachers and students of the charity class. |
