After days of indulging in high-calorie, fatty foods, many people experience uncontrolled weight gain. Doctors advise everyone to quickly regain balance in their diet and exercise routine to maintain optimal health.

Sharing on her personal page, Thuy Trang (living in Ho Chi Minh City) humorously said: "At the beginning of spring, while wealth and good fortune are still lining up and waiting to arrive, my body weight has already increased by nearly 5kg. From a chubby girl, I've now become a plump, round woman. Everyone, please congratulate me..."

An imbalance between the body's energy intake and energy expenditure is the cause of weight gain.

This is also a common situation for many people after the Lunar New Year holiday, when they indulge in high-energy, fatty, and sweet foods like sticky rice cakes, pork sausage, candies, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages. The imbalance between eating and exercise causes many people to gain weight quickly, become lethargic and tired, and feel sluggish.

Sharing his views on this issue, Associate Professor, Doctor Lam Vinh Nien, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the weight gain many people experience after the Tet holiday is due to the difference between the energy intake and energy expenditure.

During Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), communities have many opportunities to meet and socialize. Eating is frequent, often involving high-energy foods. However, physical activity during Tet is often quite sedentary, with reduced physical exertion. High energy intake coupled with low energy expenditure leads to weight gain.

According to Doctor Nien, sudden weight gain not only affects mental health and increases the risk of depression, but can also lead to other health problems and seriously impact overall health. People who gain weight rapidly are more prone to shortness of breath, and respiratory problems can lead to sleep apnea syndrome.

Weight gain puts significant pressure on bones, joints, and muscles, causing pain and affecting musculoskeletal health. Sudden weight gain can easily lead to high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and an increased risk of many other dangerous diseases.

The carefree attitude and unrestrained eating and drinking during Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays cause many people to gain weight suddenly.

To avoid the negative consequences of weight gain, which can affect both physical and mental health, Associate Professor Vinh Nien advises the community to take advantage of free time to exercise at home. This is a solution to help the body consume excess energy taken in during the day.

According to Associate Professor Vinh Nien, after the Tet holiday, those who have gained weight need to proactively take necessary measures to help their bodies return to a healthy weight. Two key issues to consider for weight control are diet and exercise. First, those wanting to lose weight need to limit high-energy foods, including fried or greasy dishes.

During meals, it's necessary to control carbohydrate intake to a lower level than before Tet. Increase the consumption of green vegetables, root vegetables, and fruits to help balance vitamins and minerals, boost immunity, and aid in weight loss.

Along with dietary restrictions, doctors recommend that those who want to lose weight increase their physical activity. Maintaining 30 to 45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each day, consistently at least 5 days a week, will help people achieve good health and their ideal weight.
