This match marked Atletico's eighth consecutive home win over Valladolid. Despite being bottom of the table, Valladolid gave Atletico a tough day.
From the very first minutes, Atletico showed their dominance with continuous attacks. Midfielder Pablo Barrios was the one who created the first chance with a shot that forced Valladolid goalkeeper Andre Ferreira to make an excellent save.
The surprise happened a few minutes later when Valladolid was awarded a penalty, in a situation where center-back Clement Lenglet handled the ball in the penalty area. Mamadou Sylla did not miss the opportunity, deceiving Jan Oblak to open the score for Valladolid.
But just four minutes later, Atletico were awarded a penalty when Javi Sanchez stepped on Giuliano Simeone's foot in the penalty area. Julian Alvarez converted the shot, equalizing for Atletico.
In the 27th minute, Simeone put Atletico 2-1 ahead with a powerful left-footed shot from inside the box. Atletico quickly turned the game around and took the lead against Valladolid before half-time.
In the second half, the visitors showed that they would not give up easily. Sanchez made up for his mistake with a precise free kick that hit a player's foot and flew into the net, bringing the match back to the starting line.

Atletico were awarded a penalty again when Henrique fouled Marcos Llorente in the box. Alvarez stepped up to take the blame and scored his second of the game in the 71st minute.
Atletico had two more attempts on Valladolid's net before the end of the match. However, only Alexander Sorloth's shot was recognized as a goal in the 79th minute. Meanwhile, Thomas Lemar's goal was disallowed by the referee.
This 4-2 victory helped Atletico shorten the gap with Barcelona and Real Madrid (to 7 and 3 points respectively) in the race to the La Liga championship this season.
