On July 30, the Algerian Foreign Ministry announced that the country had decided to withdraw its ambassador from France, after Paris recognized the autonomy plan of the Western Sahara region within the framework of Morocco's sovereignty.

Reuters reported the above information, noting that Algeria had taken similar measures against Madrid when Spain supported Morocco's autonomy plan in 2022.

Earlier, according to AFP , on the same day, July 30, in a letter to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of the country's national day, French President Emmanuel Macron said: "For Paris, Morocco's sovereign autonomy is the framework to resolve this issue. We support the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat in 2007."

According to the leader, for France, the above plan is currently "the only basis for achieving a just, lasting and negotiated political solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)".

On July 25, the Algerian Foreign Ministry issued a statement strongly protesting Paris's decision to support Morocco's autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region, which it said was "unexpected, inappropriate and counterproductive."

Algeria assessed that France's decision did not help to create conditions for a peaceful solution to the Western Sahara issue, but even reinforced the deadlock caused by this autonomy plan.

According to Algiers, while the UN is mobilizing goodwill to create new momentum for finding a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, the decision of France, a member of the Security Council, reverses these efforts, affecting peace, stability and security in the region.

Morocco has controlled Western Sahara since 1975, but many countries do not recognize the North African country's sovereignty over the territory. In 2020, then-US President Donald Trump recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Meanwhile, the pro-Algerian Polisario Front considers Western Sahara their territory and demands the establishment of a sovereign state in the region.

Algeria's position on the Western Sahara conflict is to implement the UN plan, including a self-determination referendum for the Western Saharans. Algiers considers Rabat's presence in the Sahara an illegal occupation.

This differing stance on the region has long strained relations between Morocco and Algeria.
