OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment on Baidu’s announcement. Baidu’s announcement underscores the fierce competition in AI between US and Chinese tech giants.
Baidu is the first major Chinese tech company to launch an AI product to compete with ChatGPT after announcing its AI language Ernie Bot in March. Ernie Bot, which builds on Baidu's older Ernie 3.0 AI model, has been in testing for the past three months.

Baidu said its new model comes with more efficient AI training. Baidu also said the new development will support “plugins,” according to CNBC. Plugins are additional applications that allow Baidu’s AI to work in more specific situations, such as summarizing long texts and generating more accurate answers. ChatGPT previously rolled out plugin support in March.
