The play-off match for a ticket to the 2024 Futsal World Cup took place this afternoon, April 28, between the Afghanistan Futsal Team and the Kyrgyzstan Futsal Team. Both teams had never participated in a World Cup before, so they entered the match with a very high determination.
Afghanistan were the better finishers, taking the lead 1-0 and then 2-1. Then, with Kyrgyzstan in a chasing position, they were forced to use the power-play to find an equalizer. But that was also the time when they continuously conceded goals because the goal behind them was empty. In the end, Afghanistan won 5-3 and secured a ticket to the 2024 Futsal World Cup.
This is the first time in history that an Afghan team has qualified for the World Cup at any level of world football. Due to political instability, Afghan teams have had a hard time participating in international tournaments. This year, the Afghan Futsal Team has overcome many obstacles to qualify for the global stage for the first time.
Afghanistan Futsal Team is also the last team in the world to participate in the 2024 Futsal World Cup Finals. The representative from South Asia will join 23 other teams including: Uzbekistan (host), Iran, Thailand, Tajikistan, Angola, Libya, Morocco, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Panama, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela, New Zealand, Croatia, France, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain competing in the tournament taking place from September 14 to October 6 this year.
