According to Dr. Chu Duc Hoang - Chief of Office of the National Technology Innovation Fund, Vice President of the Association of Young Vietnamese Scientists and Technologists, the European Union (EU) is increasingly setting strict requirements on “greening” production and consumption. These are requirements for efficient use of resources, reduction of carbon emissions and environmental protection. These requirements directly impact countries with export-dependent economies like Vietnam.

“It is worrying that up to 89% of domestic exporting enterprises have not met the standards of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

CBAM is a tool to fairly price the carbon emissions from the production of high-carbon goods imported into the EU and to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries. This shows a low level of readiness to meet the new requirements,” said Mr. Hoang.

According to Mr. Hoang, lack of information, limited investment capital, outdated technology and inadequate human resources are major challenges for Vietnamese enterprises in the process of complying with green standards. Limited green capacity creates the risk of losing market share, reducing export turnover and being eliminated from the global supply chain.

Dr. Chu Duc Hoang said that the "green" capacity of Vietnamese export enterprises is still limited.

Implementing a “green” transformation impacts growth through many different channels, contributing to creating a multi-dimensional “push” for the economy. In particular, green transformation creates new investment opportunities in areas such as renewable energy, environmental technology, and organic agriculture, helping to attract domestic and foreign investment capital.

Promoting the development of “green” industries and “green” services will create new jobs and increase workers’ income. Quantitative studies have shown a positive relationship between green transformation and GDP growth. Improving technological capabilities is a vital factor for businesses.

To improve technological capacity, according to Mr. Hoang, businesses should not only focus on technology and innovation in management processes and business models, but also need to build a culture that encourages creativity, experimentation with new things, and risk-taking.

“Focusing on training human resources, especially engineers and technicians with expertise in the environment, renewable energy and other green technologies, also contributes to enhancing the internal strength of enterprises. Enterprises need to establish green supply chains to help minimize negative impacts on the environment and optimize resource efficiency,” Mr. Hoang recommended.
