This morning, June 29, data released by the General Statistics Office showed that in the first 6 months of 2024, international visitors to Vietnam reached more than 8.8 million, an increase of 4.1% over the same period in 2019 before the pandemic. In June 2024 alone, the number of international visitors was about 1.25 million, an increase of 28.1% over the same period last year, but a decrease of 10% compared to May this year.
Of which, the number of international visitors to Vietnam by air still dominates with more than 7.4 million arrivals, by road with more than 1.26 million arrivals; visitors by sea are insignificant.
Thus, the number of visitors in the first half of the year has reached 50% of the annual target of 17-18 million. However, Vietnam's peak international tourist season is from October to April, so the end of the year will be an opportunity for the tourism industry to accelerate.
In addition, revenue from accommodation and catering services in the whole industry is estimated to increase by 15.2%; revenue from tourism increased by 37.1% over the same period last year.
Notably, in the first 6 months of the year, South Korea remained the largest market sending visitors to Vietnam with 2.28 million arrivals. China ranked second with nearly 1.9 million arrivals. The remaining markets in the top 10 include: Taiwan, Japan, the US, Australia, India, Australia, Malaysia, and Cambodia.

According to information from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, Korea has always been the top target market for domestic tourism. Korean visitors to Vietnam increased 5 times in the period 2014-2019, with an average growth rate of 38%/year. In 2023, Korea will be Vietnam's largest tourist market with 3.6 million visitors. In contrast, Vietnam is also Korea's leading source market in Southeast Asia with about 420,000 visitors.
In order to stimulate tourism, the Vietnam National Tourism Administration is planning a promotional campaign to continue attracting international visitors. From June 24 to July 2, the Administration will organize a program to introduce Vietnamese tourism in Paris (France), Milan (Italy) and Frankfurt (Germany). Because industry leaders have identified Europe as a key market for the tourism industry, visitors often choose long vacations and spend a lot of money.
In 2023, Vietnam welcomed over 1.4 million European visitors, an increase of 187% compared to 2022. In the first five months of 2024, there were over 975,000 European visitors to Vietnam, an increase of 57.1% over the same period in 2023.
Also from June 29 to July 3, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will organize the Vietnam Tourism and Culture Promotion Festival in Korea in 2024. The festival introduces the image of the country and people, promotes the Vietnamese tourism brand, promotes destinations, services, and tourism potential of our country to Korean people through cultural and tourism activities./.
According to the General Statistics Office, in the first two quarters, service export turnover was estimated at 11.25 billion USD, up 20% over the same period last year. Of which, tourism services were the highest, reaching 6 billion USD, accounting for 53.1% of total turnover (up 40% over the same period last year).
Service import turnover in the first 6 months of 2024 is estimated at 16.11 billion USD, up 22% over the same period last year, of which tourism services reached 4.9 billion USD (accounting for 30.4%), up 52.9%.
