800 households directly benefit from the project of developing livelihoods combined with tourism in Hoi An

The project to develop sustainable community livelihood models combined with ecotourism to promote socio -economic development, contributing to the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve is implemented in Cam Kim and Cam Thanh communes (Hoi An city) organized and operated by the Hoi An City Women's Union.

This is a small grant project under the Project “Integrating natural resource management and biodiversity conservation objectives into socio-economic development planning and management of biosphere reserves in Vietnam” (BR Project) implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through UNDP Vietnam. The total project cost is over VND 5.1 billion, implemented from January 2023 to December 2024.

The outstanding results achieved by the project are the construction and development of
sustainable livelihood model based on ecotourism , tourism
community learning and direct income generation for about 800 households, far exceeding the initial target of 320 households. Of which, Cam Thanh commune has 627 households and Cam Kim commune has 173 households.

According to Ms. Ngo Thi Tuyet Nhung - President of Hoi An City Women's Union, after 2 years of implementation, the project has achieved initial results, creating a livelihood model and helping people improve their awareness and capacity by participating in project activities and changing careers...

Households have also learned to participate in the management and conservation of natural resources and historical and cultural relics associated with simple, rustic but meaningful stories about spiritual and cultural life associated with the stories of the countryside and local ecological craft villages, while contributing to creating more attractive rural tourism products for tourists to visit and experience in Hoi An.

In the long term, the project has impacted many socio-economic and environmental areas in the buffer zone of Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An biosphere reserve, especially in the communities of Cam Kim and Cam Thanh communes.

The project also contributes to building Hoi An city "ecology - culture - tourism"; at the same time contributes to building and successfully implementing national target programs on new rural construction of the two localities as well as supporting the biosphere to perform conservation functions, livelihood development andeducational functions.
