According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2025 report, cancer is the leading cause of death globally, causing about 10 million deaths each year, accounting for 1 in 6 deaths.

The most common cancers are breast, lung, colon and rectal, and prostate cancers.

About one-third of cancer deaths are due to tobacco use, obesity, alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake and lack of physical activity.

Now, new research published in the journal Scientific Reports has identified eight essential things that, if adjusted, can help reduce your risk of cancer, according to the medical news site News Medical.

The study, conducted by scientists at Peking University International Hospital in collaboration with experts at Kailuan General Hospital, Tangshan (China), included 48,330 participants, aiming to explore the direct link between lifestyle factors and health parameters and cancer risk.

Measure and quantify LE8 points

"Life's Essential 8" LE8 ("Life's Essential 8") is a comprehensive lifestyle assessment tool designed by the American Heart Association to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving habits and lifestyle.

Participants were assessed for LE8 score using an algorithm recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA).

LE8 includes the following 8 items:

  • 4 behavioral factors: Diet, physical activity, smoking, sleep
  • 4 health parameters: Weight, "bad" cholesterol levels, blood sugar and blood pressure.

Participants were scored on how healthy they were on these eight factors. Based on their scores, participants were divided into three levels: High, Medium, and Low.

The authors found that people with high LE8 scores were less likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure, or fatty liver at the start of the study.

During a median follow-up of more than 10 years, there were 2,306 new cases of cancer.

The results found that adherence to optimal lifestyle habits significantly reduced the risk of major cancers. For those with high LE8 scores, the cancer-preventive effect was strongest. They had a significantly lower overall cancer risk.

Specifically, people with consistently high LE8 scores had a 21% reduced risk of cancer, and people with average LE8 scores had a 15% reduced risk of cancer compared to people with consistently low scores.

For specific cancers, those with an average LE8 score consistently over 4 years had a 49% reduced risk of breast cancer and a 34% reduced risk of liver cancer compared with those with a low score.

Notably, people with a consistently high LE8 score for four years had a 51% reduced risk of breast cancer, a 27% reduced risk of lung cancer, and a 31% reduced risk of colorectal cancer, according to News Medical.

Even people exposed to air pollution, if they have a high LE8 score, still have a significantly reduced risk of lung cancer.

Getting enough, high-quality sleep is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of cancer.

A moderate to high LE8 score indicates a healthy lifestyle characterized by habits that:

  • Eat healthy: Include whole foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, nuts, and plenty of olive and canola oils.
  • Regular physical activity
  • Get enough, high-quality sleep
  • Quit smoking.

All of these factors are important for maintaining a healthy weight, healthy blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Improvements in these are key to a high LE8 score, which helps reduce cancer risk.
