This activity is part of the project "Supporting recovery for women affected by storm No. 3 Yagi in 2024 in Lao Cai province," funded by the Australian Agency for International Development and the New Zealand Government , implemented by UN Women in coordination with the Lao Cai Provincial Women's Union and local authorities, to help vulnerable local women restore their livelihoods, ensure social security and promote gender equality after natural disasters.
The project beneficiaries are women from poor or near-poor households who have lost their livelihoods or had their income significantly reduced (70%) due to storm Yagi; ethnic minority women; single-headed women, those with disabilities or chronic illnesses, pregnant women or those with children under 5 years old; households with elderly people (over 65 years old) who cannot work and women who are victims of gender-based violence in Den Thang, Trung Leng Ho, Muong Vi and Muong Hum communes, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province.
Ms. Caroline Nyamayemombe, UN Women Representative in Vietnam, said: "Natural disasters not only cause material damage but also deeply affect the lives and livelihoods of many households. This cash support is not only emergency relief but also a source of encouragement to help Lao Cai women have more opportunities to recover and develop sustainably."

In addition to cash transfers, the program also incorporates communication activities on gender-based violence prevention and training on climate-adaptive livelihood restoration. This is an important initiative to raise women’s awareness of their rights, helping them proactively prevent and respond to risks of domestic and gender-based violence in the post-disaster context.
At the same time, the training course on climate change adaptation livelihood restoration provides knowledge and skills for households to use cash support effectively, invest appropriately in agricultural production or business models suitable to local conditions and climate change.
Through the project, women beneficiaries will have the right to proactively use the support to meet their needs for reinvestment in production activities or livelihood recovery. The project also continues to affirm UN Women’s strong commitment to accompanying Vietnamese women, especially vulnerable groups, in the context of natural disasters and crises.
