On March 31, Cho Ray Hospital said that at around 8:30 p.m. on March 30, the hospital's emergency department continuously received six patients suspected of methanol poisoning in critical condition.

The patients were transferred from Can Giuoc District Hospital ( Long An ). Of the total six people, two patients were in a coma and had to be intubated and put on a ventilator.

The patients include D.T.D. (28 years old), THT (41 years old), PVTB (50 years old), BVD. (51 years old), D.VL (51 years old) and PNQK (25 years old).

Medical history showed that all six people were part of a group residing in Tien Giang province who traveled together to Ninh Thuan province.

At around 8:00 p.m. on March 29, everyone drank a fruit wine called KT, produced in Tien Giang .

After drinking about 6 bottles of wine, each bottle 500ml, nearly 6 hours later the patients showed signs of digestive disorders, vomiting..., however they thought it was simply drunkenness so they did not go to the hospital for examination.

At around 3:00 p.m. on March 30, on the way from Ninh Thuan back to Tien Giang, the patients' symptoms became increasingly severe, including the youngest patient, PNQK (25 years old), who fell into a state of drowsiness.

All six people were then taken to Can Giuoc District Hospital (the nearest) for emergency treatment. At this time, patient BVD. (51 years old) and PNQK (25 years old) were in a coma, had low blood pressure, were intubated, given a balloon, and given IV fluids, and all were transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for emergency treatment.

Doctor Le Quoc Hung - head of the tropical disease department, Cho Ray Hospital - said that this was a cluster of cases at the same time, along with clinical symptoms, doctors determined it was methanol poisoning.

Immediately after that, the hospital held an urgent interdisciplinary consultation and divided into two groups, with two seriously ill patients requiring ventilators being transferred to the intensive care unit for blood filtration. The remaining patients underwent blood filtration right in the emergency department to eliminate toxins.

Doctor Hung also said that one of the two severe cases is currently progressing well, the patient is awake, does not need to use vasopressors, the patient can be taken off the ventilator during the day, the prognosis is good.

As for the youngest patient, PNQK (25 years old), he is still in a deep coma, his vital signs have not improved well, he is suspected of having brain damage due to poisoning, and is being closely monitored for specialized testing.

The remaining patients are being monitored and treated at Cho Ray Hospital.

According to Dr. Hung, methanol poisoning is not a new poisoning, on average the hospital receives 30-50 cases each year.

According to doctors, alcohol made from rice, glutinous rice, and noodles is ethanol alcohol and has a higher price. Industrial alcohol containing methanol is much cheaper. Normally, it is difficult to distinguish between these two types of alcohol.

Doctor Hung said that when suffering from alcohol poisoning, the patient will have symptoms such as low blood pressure, weak limbs, blurred vision, sweating, fever, convulsions, coma... People should not drink alcohol of unknown origin.
