On March 31, Cho Ray Hospital announced that it had received 6 patients suspected of alcohol poisoning, transferred from Can Giuoc Regional General Hospital ( Long An ).
According to medical history, this group of patients resides in Tien Giang and traveled to Ninh Thuan. On the evening of March 29, they drank 6 bottles of KT brand fruit wine (produced in Tien Giang), each bottle was 500ml.
About 6 hours later, all of them started to have symptoms of digestive disorders, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, but at first they thought it was just a normal hangover. By 3:00 p.m. on March 30, on the way back to Tien Giang , the symptoms became more and more severe. In particular, patient PNQK (25 years old) showed signs of drowsiness and loss of consciousness.
Immediately, the group was taken to the emergency room at Can Giuoc Regional General Hospital. Doctors administered IV fluids, resuscitated the seriously ill patients, and transferred them to Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr. Le Quoc Hung, Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital, said that upon admission, all 6 patients were in a state of severe metabolic acidosis. Based on clinical symptoms and information from the patients, doctors suspected that this group had methanol (industrial alcohol) poisoning.
The two most serious patients, BVD (51 years old) and PNQK (25 years old), were in a coma and had to be intubated and put on a ventilator. In particular, PNQK had extremely severe acidosis and could not measure the pH level.
After consultation, both patients were given vasopressors and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for dialysis.
Up to now, the patient has regained consciousness, the acidosis is under control, no longer needs vasopressors, and the prognosis is good.
Patient PNQK is still in a deep coma, although his blood acidity is improving. Doctors are concerned about physical brain damage due to methanol poisoning and will continue to monitor and evaluate him further.
Four other patients, including D.T.D (28 years old), THT (41 years old), PVTB (50 years old), and D.VL (51 years old), were all conscious but still tired and vomiting. They received dialysis at the Emergency Department and are now gradually recovering, with a good prognosis.
According to Dr. Le Quoc Hung, methanol poisoning is a problem that is frequently warned about but still occurs continuously. On average, each year, the Poison Control Unit of Cho Ray Hospital receives 30-50 cases of methanol poisoning.
