Towards the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), VNA correspondent in Buenos Aires had a talk with Ms. Poldi Sosa Schmith, President of the Argentina-Vietnam Cultural Institute.
For Ms. Poldi, the victory of April 30, 1975 was not only a day of total victory for the Vietnamese people, but also a day of victory for revolutionary forces and peace- loving people around the world.
Although 50 years have passed, the memories of the historic moment of the Vietnamese nation are still present in the mind of this woman over 80 years old. At that time, she was living and working in Cuba, the good news of victory in Vietnam spread very quickly.
At that time, verifying information was not easy, so she had to meet a close Vietnamese friend working at the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Cuba to find the answer.
According to her memory, a few hours after the moment of victory, Cuban President Fidel Castro, in an olive military uniform, came to the Vietnamese Embassy to congratulate. The emotions of everyone who was waiting for the news of victory were truly overwhelming.
Recalling old memories, Ms. Poldi emotionally showed the newspaper Granma, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of Cuba, published on April 30, 1975, with the large headline: "Decisive victory of the Vietnamese people, Saigon surrenders unconditionally."
In the Western Hemisphere, due to the time zone difference, this special issue was published on April 30, 1975. After 50 years, the newspaper has turned yellow with time and is no longer intact, but Ms. Poldi said that even though she has moved from Cuba to Argentina, and then moved many times, she still keeps the newspaper as an extremely precious souvenir.
According to Ms. Poldi, the victory of April 30, 1975 will forever be a brilliant milestone in the history of building and defending the country of the Vietnamese people. This victory is not only the pride of the Vietnamese people, but also a brilliant symbol of the aspiration for independence and freedom for peace-loving people around the world.
During the talk, the “old friend” of Vietnam also recalled her “long-lasting relationship” with this distant country. That was since the 60s of the 20th century, when she was still living in England, she participated in demonstrations supporting the struggle of the Vietnamese people.
Later, when she moved to Chile, she was also a founding member of the Chile-Vietnam Friendship Cultural Institute and this organization contributed greatly to the establishment of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Chile in March 1971.
Later, Ms. Poldi also actively supported the opening of the Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina in 1995. In December 1997, she established the Argentina-Vietnam Cultural Institute in Buenos Aires to promote and introduce Argentine culture in Vietnam, and at the same time promote Vietnamese culture to Argentina.
Coming to Vietnam for the first time in 1997, Ms. Poldi has visited the S-shaped country 26 times to date. She has witnessed the miraculous changes of Vietnam in recent decades.
She was very pleased with the positive changes in society as the quality of life improved, the economy developed strongly, social security, education and healthcare were ensured. This showed the correctness of the policies of the Party and State of Vietnam in recent years./.
