The recently released “APAC AI Outlook 2025” report by IBM provides an insight into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on businesses in the region.

The report highlights the dramatic shift from AI experimentation to maximizing value from investments, and identifies five strategic trends that will shape the future of AI.

Businesses expect AI to bring long-term benefits

Sharing on the topic "Predicting the Future: AI & Technology Trends in 2025," Mr. Ngo Thanh Hien - Chief Technology Officer of IBM Vietnam said that Vietnamese business leaders clearly showed interest in artificial intelligence but were quite cautious about their "action plans".

Mr. Hien shared that he has worked with a number of large customers and noticed that leaders and strategists are calmer, looking for a more strategic approach to AI. However, according to Mr. Hien, this is a basic game, so businesses are forced to join this flow, otherwise they will fall behind.

Responding to the question about why businesses are cautious, Mr. Hien said that business leaders are still considering the real values that AI brings to the business or the impact AI has on the reputation and image of the business.

According to him, despite economic difficulties, finance is not necessarily a problem for businesses because the "AI packages" are designed to be quite diverse and have costs suitable for businesses.

In the report "AI Outlook in Asia-Pacific 2025" conducted by IBM, businesses in the region, including Vietnam, are making a strong shift from the AI testing phase to maximizing the impact of investments in this technology solution.

According to the report, businesses in the region are making a strong move from the AI experimentation phase to maximizing the impact of investments in new technology solutions.

Accordingly, 54% of businesses expect AI to bring long-term benefits in aspects such as innovation and revenue growth. The key factor lies in developing AI solutions that are cost-optimized, flexibly using custom open source models and seamless integration between multiple vendors.

The pursuit of short-term goals in the early stages of generative AI is being replaced by a deeper understanding of AI’s potential. At the same time, the focus is shifting from low-risk, non-core use cases to deploying AI in core business functions to gain competitive advantage and improve ROI.

According to an IBM report conducted by Ecosystm, nearly 60% of businesses in the Asia-Pacific region surveyed predict that they will benefit from AI investments within the next two to five years, while only 11% of them expect to see a return in the first two years.

However, to realize these goals, businesses must address key challenges, including data complexity (39%), high costs of implementation and solutions (36%), and limited use cases (35%).

"Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful force driving Vietnamese businesses towards innovation, global competitiveness and sustainable growth. By 2025, we expect businesses in Vietnam to embrace AI with a focus on strategies that focus on human-centered innovation and productivity enhancement.

This will include the use of flexible, open-source architecture and effective management to seamlessly integrate AI to achieve measurable results. This transformation will pave the way for an era of technology adoption, where AI is seen as a true driver of sustainable growth and competitive advantage," said Mr. Truong Nguyen Phat - General Director and Chief Technology Officer of IBM Vietnam.

According to IBM representative, there will be 5 strategic trends for AI. These are: Enterprises will prioritize projects with profit impact; open source AI models, optimized and requiring less training data will dominate; deploy tools to optimize system management capabilities and integrate AI seamlessly; AI assistants combine AI and automation to increase operational efficiency and customer experience.

In addition, experts predict a major trend of human-centricity driving the next phase of AI development. "While high-performance tools are the main focus in AI applications, in the future AI will be leveraged to focus on enhancing human experience and capabilities," said Ngo Thanh Hien. Accordingly, AI will be a tool to support human resources at work, automate routine tasks, and support innovation.

“Humans are essential to the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Humans need to be involved in every stage of the technology, including maintaining oversight of critical applications. The purpose of AI is to create positive impacts on the world, fostering a culture based on trust, collaboration and co-creation. Development needs to be driven by the mindset that AI enhances rather than replaces humans, and that the two work and grow together,” said Ullrich Loeffler, CEO of Ecosyst, which supported the survey./.
