Cancer is not the end!
For nearly 5 months, after discovering he had rectal cancer, Mr. Luong Van To (78 years old, living in Da Lat City, Lam Dong) has been receiving regular treatment at Cho Ray Hospital and receiving supportive treatment at the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine.
Mr. To said that before, he had a bowel movement and saw a lot of blood. He went to Lam Dong General Hospital for examination and discovered a tumor near his anus and was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital. There, the doctor diagnosed him with a malignant rectal tumor (12 mm) and prescribed chemotherapy. After 4 chemotherapy sessions, the tumor was gone but the rectal wall was still thick, so Mr. To continued to be prescribed radiation therapy combined with chemotherapy.
“Every time I undergo chemotherapy, a healthy person is tired, let alone an elderly person. However, I have previously studied the combination of Eastern and Western medicine in cancer treatment, so after each chemotherapy session, I go to the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine for supportive treatment to improve my resistance. Currently, my health has improved, I eat well and sleep well,” said Mr. To.
Similarly, in 2019, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thach (64 years old, living in Vung Tau City) was diagnosed with lung cancer (stage 3). After undergoing 6 chemotherapy sessions at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital (HCMC), the tumor size did not decrease, he became discouraged and gave up.
“I was transferred to the Oncology Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine for supportive treatment. I unexpectedly ate and slept well, and my illness progressed positively. Now I am confident in “living with the disease” and feel secure in my treatment,” Mr. Thach said excitedly.
Here, Mr. Thach drinks a bottle of traditional medicine every day, sometimes 10 herbs a week, sometimes up to 25 herbs. The doctor spends a lot of time explaining his condition, sharing, encouraging, and helping him feel more comfortable. Up to now, not only has the cancer stabilized, but his old age bone and joint conditions have also improved.

At the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology, Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine, there are many cases like Mr. To and Mr. Thach. Many of them, when their families brought them for treatment, were only skin and bones, their health was exhausted, but thanks to the release of the mental knot that "cancer is not a death sentence", the patients no longer had the mentality of giving up. They lived happily, sociably and shared their own experiences with newcomers to help them overcome the disease together.
Comprehensive therapy for patients
According to Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology, Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine, the causes of cancer are similar in both modern medicine and traditional medicine. The yin-yang theory of traditional medicine states that all things and phenomena have two opposing sides. If there is cancer, there will be something that fights cancer. Modern medicine has discovered that in the human body there is a gene that fights cancer, which is the tumor suppressor gene (also known as the tumor suppressor gene). The tumor depressor gene is activated by a strong immune system that traditional medicine calls the vital energy. If the vital energy is good, it will definitely defeat cancer.
The main cause is stress, Dr. Tuan Anh further analyzed and said that this is a negative life stimulant, making people worried, sad, angry, and afraid. According to Oriental medicine, anxiety reduces the digestive system; sadness harms the respiratory system; fear harms the reproductive system, kidneys, and pancreas. Of these, constant fear is the most dangerous because it weakens the immune system.
Therefore, to treat cancer, in addition to using modern medical means to destroy tumors (such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc.), 4T therapy aims to limit exposure to external factors that have negative effects, increase resistance for patients, limit recurrence and metastasis, and improve quality of life.
4T therapy has been applied by the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine to treat cancer patients since 2003. Up to now, tens of thousands of seriously ill patients have had their condition improved by 80%.
4T includes: T1 (psychology, mental health), changing a stressful lifestyle by living peacefully, reducing anxiety, sadness, anger, forgiveness, simplifying life between work and rest; T2 (food therapy), eating nutritious, delicious and healthy food, avoiding certain foods and drinks that are harmful to the body; T3 (health therapy exercises), improving blood circulation by walking, tai chi, limiting lying and sitting; and T4 (medication), combining Eastern and Western medicine with acupuncture and acupressure.
“Although this therapy does not completely destroy the tumor, it can prevent the destruction of the tumor for a while, has no side effects, improves the patient's spirit and prolongs life. I am very happy that many patients persevere with treatment, cooperate with doctors, and prolong their lives from 1 to over 10 years, in some cases more than 20 years, still living happily and healthily,” Dr. Tuan Anh shared.
Dr. Truong Thi Ngoc Lan, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Traditional Medicine, recommends that in order for cancer to no longer be scary, people need to know how to prevent it, by changing their lifestyle and diet, getting early cancer screening and comprehensive treatment.
Absolutely do not arbitrarily use oral medicines of unknown origin, when arriving at the hospital in a serious condition, the treatment process becomes more difficult. In addition to 4T, the traditional medicine that the hospital often uses is a combination of heat-clearing herbs, acting on the tumor at the same time on the internal organs or has the effect of regulating the internal organs to stabilize the symptoms.
