453 houses damaged, economic loss of more than 14 billion VND due to natural disasters in the first quarter of 2025

On the afternoon of April 13, a representative of the Department of Planning and Finance (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) said that in the first 3 months of 2025, natural disasters caused 5 deaths and missing people; 6 people were injured; total economic damage was estimated at 14.2 billion VND.

Of the total economic losses mentioned above, 453 houses were damaged; 6,868 hectares of rice and crops; 1,708 hectares of other crops were affected, flooded, and damaged.

In March alone, 1 person was injured; 382 houses had their roofs blown off or damaged; 02 cultural houses were affected; 127.7 hectares of fruit trees were damaged.

Regarding irrigation and natural disaster prevention, information from the Department of Planning and Finance said that in the first quarter of 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment received and explained to submit to the Prime Minister for approval: Irrigation planning for the Mekong River basin and the Red-Thai Binh River basin for the period 2022-2030, with a vision to 205011; Project on prevention and control of subsidence, landslides, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2030, with a vision to 2050.

Along with that, on March 26, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment also issued a document to provinces and cities on strictly implementing the regulations in the Flood Prevention and Control Planning and the Dike Planning of the Red River and Thai Binh River systems according to the Conclusion of the Government Inspectorate No. 495/KL-TTCP dated December 9, 2024...

In the coming time, the representative of the Department of Planning and Finance said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will continue to direct units in charge of hydrometeorological forecasting to closely monitor weather, water resources, and saltwater intrusion; and be on duty to respond to natural disasters 24/7 to direct and support authorities at all levels and people to proactively prepare to respond and overcome consequences promptly and effectively.

Along with that, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is responsible for urging localities to implement directives and telegrams on strengthening management and ensuring the safety of dams and reservoirs during the rainy and flood seasons; strengthening dike management and preparing for dike protection and flood prevention; providing guidance on storing water in the irrigation system for irrigation; reinforcing banks and field banks to retain water in the fields and prevent loss for areas that have been supplied with enough water.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will coordinate with the Government Office to review and supplement the dossier according to the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and submit to the Prime Minister for approval the Irrigation Planning for the Mekong River Basin and the Red-Thai Binh River Basin for the period 2022-2030, with a vision to 2050; Project on prevention and control of subsidence, landslides, flooding, drought, and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta region until 2030, with a vision to 2050.

Along with that, complete the irrigation planning dossier of Ca River for the period of 2022-2030, with a vision to 2050, and send it to ministries, branches, and localities for comments; organize the establishment of the Dike Planning and Flood Prevention and Control Planning of the dike-covered river system of the Red River and Thai Binh River for the period of 2025-2035, with a vision to 2050./.
