4 things parents whose children become successful entrepreneurs often regret

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí30/12/2024

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - For over 15 years, American psychologist Margot Machol Bisnow has interviewed hundreds of entrepreneurs and their parents to learn about how these entrepreneurs were raised.

Margot Machol Bisnow is a parenting consultant in the United States. She has 20 years of experience in financial consulting and over 10 years as a consultant advising parents on successful parenting.

Ms. Bisnow interviewed hundreds of successful entrepreneurs and their parents to learn about how these entrepreneurs were raised.

Expert Bisnow recognizes that even those who have successfully raised their children still have regrets, because the journey of raising children is never a perfect one. When sharing their experiences with Ms. Bisnow, successful parents often have four regrets.

You need to be calmer if your child doesn't complete their university program.

Most parents believe that a college degree is essential for launching a successful career. However, many famous entrepreneurs around the world have dropped out of college.

Billionaire Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University. Sam Altman, CEO of the artificial intelligence research company OpenAI, dropped out of Stanford University.

Tech entrepreneur Matt Mullenweg, founder of the WordPress content management system, dropped out of the University of Houston. The world's richest man, Elon Musk, abandoned his studies at Stanford University.

All of these individuals harbored very impressive startup ideas, and they decided to stop their studies to quickly embark on their own plans. They decided to drop out of school because they wanted to take advantage of the opportune moment in their entrepreneurial journey.

Furthermore, these prominent entrepreneurs all emphasized that if their businesses didn't go well and had to shut down, they could absolutely return to their studies.

During the interviews, Ms. Bisnow also encountered many similar stories. Many successful entrepreneurs she met had dropped out of university, causing their parents considerable worry. However, looking back, many parents felt they shouldn't have been so anxious and stressed about their children's futures.

Their children not completing their university education isn't actually as serious as they imagine. Ultimately, reality shows that when young people have a truly viable entrepreneurial idea, passion, unwavering enthusiasm, and relentless hard work, they will achieve success.

Cherish your child's hobbies and passions.

Jon Chu, the renowned American director who has helmed films like Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Wicked (2024), once caused his parents considerable worry. From elementary school, Jon Chu was passionate about screenwriting and filmmaking. His parents feared this passion would distract him from his studies and negatively impact his future.

When speaking with expert Bisnow, director Jon Chu's parents expressed regret for being too strict with their son, forbidding him from pursuing his passion. In fact, many other parents share similar experiences to Jon Chu's parents.

Looking back, many parents realize that their children's hobbies can contribute to their future career success. This is because children learn many valuable things while pursuing their hobbies.

Ms. Bisnow noticed that many entrepreneurs excelled in sports from a young age. Their parents used to worry that their children spending too much time playing sports would negatively impact their studies.

However, some successful entrepreneurs have shared with Ms. Bisnow that they learned many important skills through playing sports. Later in life, they acquired perseverance, patience, confidence, and boldness thanks to their sports experiences. These qualities have greatly helped them in pursuing their business careers.

Be open with your children about family finances.

Many entrepreneurs shared with Ms. Bisnow that their parents were the first to teach them about the value of money from a young age. However, when speaking with the parents of successful entrepreneurs, Ms. Bisnow noticed that some parents still regretted having been hesitant to share family financial matters with their children.

Teaching children about the value of money, how their parents earn and save money, and how to spend money appropriately are all important financial skills in their early years.

In fact, openly discussing finances with children can help both parents and children feel more comfortable, increasing bonding and sharing within the family. Some parents hope to find a suitable way to have a conversation with their children about family finances, turning this topic into a useful educational experience.

Remain calm in the face of your child's failures.

Parents of successful children generally have a calm perspective on failure; however, many still feel that this is not enough.

Sharing their experiences with expert Bisnow, many parents expressed regret for not having a more optimistic and warm perspective on their children's failures. Later, many parents truly understood that boldly experimenting was the only way to progress and achieve success.

In the process of experimentation, children will encounter failures, but it is through these failures that they will learn many things. Many parents, witnessing their children's failures, feel sorrow and regret; they lack the strength to maintain an optimistic and trusting mindset, to help their children overcome failures more easily.
