34 irrigation reservoirs at high risk of unsafety

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province, after checking the safety status of 123 irrigation reservoirs and 2 dams in the province, 91 works were assessed as safe (level A) and basically safe; 34 works were assessed as having a high risk of unsafety (level C). For 481 other irrigation works including: 221 dams, 243 pumping stations, 17 saltwater prevention sluices and 2,125 km of various canals, after checking, 51 works were damaged and degraded.

To ensure the safety of the works before the flood season of 2025 and the following years, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has sent a document requesting the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to annually allocate funds to fully implement the safety contents of dams and reservoirs according to the provisions of Decree 114/2018/ND-CP dated September 4, 2018. Funding support for repairing and upgrading 51 reservoirs in the province.

In the immediate future, for urgent handling, it is recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment prioritize support for the allocation of an estimated budget of about 34.5 billion VND to invest in repairing and urgently repairing severely damaged items such as: rubber buoys for flood discharge of Nam Thach Han irrigation project; spillways of Truc Kinh and Ai Tu reservoirs; Chau Thi saltwater prevention spillway; Phu Dung dam, and the dam surface of Ai Tu reservoir to ensure safety for the project before the 2025 flood season.
