The newborns are being treated in the Egyptian city of Rafah, south of Gaza. Mohamed Zaqout, director of the Gaza hospital, said the babies were suffering from dehydration, hypothermia and some cases of sepsis. He said four other babies had died two days earlier.

A World Health Organization team that visited Al Shifa hospital said most of the remaining patients were in critical condition, suffering from infections and burns. Plans to evacuate them are expected to be made in the coming days.

Late on November 19, the Israeli military said it had strong evidence to back up its claim that Hamas was maintaining a large command post beneath the Al Shifa hospital. Israel has made the hospital a key target in its war to end Hamas rule in Gaza.

The military said it had found a 55-meter-long tunnel about 10 meters deep beneath the hospital complex. The tunnel included a staircase, blast doors and a firing hole that could have been used by snipers.
