It is known that the "Communication Day on Non-Communicable Disease Prevention" is within the framework of the "Vietnam Youth Health" Project for the period 2023-2025.
At the opening ceremony of the festival, Dr. Nguyen Nho Huy, Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said: The "Health of Vietnamese Youth" project has created an environment to promote a healthy lifestyle, supporting the prevention of non-communicable diseases through increased physical activity, healthy nutrition, no smoking, no drinking alcohol. These activities also contribute significantly to reducing air pollution.
The project has received strong response from students, parents, teachers and active participation from 29 schools in 4 districts in Hanoi. The cooperation between the parties within the project framework as well as the project results have been and are contributing positively to the implementation of the priorities of the Ministry of Education and Training, especially the school health program for the period 2021-2025".
“We need to pay attention to the growth and development of young people at this stage,” said Ms. Pham Thu Ba, Acting Country Director of Plan International, the project coordinator. “Evidence shows that unhealthy behaviors that cause non-communicable diseases, including unhealthy nutrition, smoking, lack of physical activity, and alcohol use, are often formed during adolescence but can have long-term consequences and impacts that even span generations. To improve the prevention of non-communicable diseases, we need to pay more attention and invest in the early years of life, especially in adolescents.”

The festival includes communication activities carried out by the propaganda team, combined with drawing, tug of war and basketball competitions to improve knowledge and increase physical activity for students. This is an opportunity for students to learn from each other and interact with teachers and parents; thereby, creating an open space, encouraging students to practice a healthy lifestyle. The event has attracted the attention of education managers and state management agencies on school health for adolescents. From there, the project will record important lessons to recommend integration into policies related to the prevention of non-communicable diseases in adolescents.

Also within the framework of the festival, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place to inaugurate a basketball court that was upgraded with the project's support to create conditions for children to participate in sports activities more regularly, especially girls.
The project and its partners believe that, with the efforts, commitment and active participation of all stakeholders, the positive impact of the project will not only stop at the four districts of Cau Giay, Long Bien, Dong Anh and Hai Ba Trung but will spread to other schools in Hanoi as well as throughout the country.
The Youth Health Program Phase 2 is a 3-year program from 2023-2025 that aims to contribute to improving the health and quality of life of Vietnamese youth, especially the age group of 10-24 in the 4 districts of Cau Giay, Long Bien, Dong Anh and Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi city. The four basic tasks of the project include: improving the capacity to prevent non-communicable diseases for students; providing information to parents and teachers to facilitate students to practice healthy and safe health behaviors; improving the quality of health and physical education activities in schools to support students to access friendly services; recommending relevant policies to facilitate the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and improve the health of students. Through the project activities, we aim to provide knowledge and skills related to the prevention of non-communicable diseases to approximately 49,300 Vietnamese adolescents in 29 schools in the project. In addition, we also aim to provide information to approximately 300,000 people in the community through awareness raising activities in the mass media. Globally, since its inception in 2010, the Adolescent Health Program has directly reached more than 10 million adolescents in more than 40 countries on 5 continents, including Vietnam. In phase 1, implemented in Vietnam from 2019-2022, the Youth Health Program has also completed all key objectives and had a significant impact on target groups. Some encouraging results include: the project reached and disseminated information on non-communicable disease prevention directly to more than 50,000 students in project schools and indirectly reached nearly 2 million adolescents and people in the community. Among students in project schools, 81% showed changes in awareness of risk factors for non-communicable diseases, 79% increased awareness of 3 or more non-communicable diseases, and the rate of adolescents with positive behaviors on healthy nutrition increased by 63%. |
