Azerbaijan Airlines said the plane departed with 67 people on board, including 62 passengers and five crew members. According to information from Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations, 27 people were rescued from the wreckage, according to Reuters.

Russian media reported that the plane had to divert due to weather conditions in Grozny. Kazakh authorities said they were seeking information to determine what happened to the flight, including whether there was a technical problem.

Russia's aviation regulator said initial investigation results showed the pilot decided to make an emergency landing after the plane was hit by a bird.

Following the plane crash, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who was in Russia preparing for the summit, immediately returned home, TASS reported.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov sent his condolences to the families of the victims and comforted those seriously injured in the plane crash.
