2 common reasons why many people with lung cancer discover it late

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/12/2024

Regular check-ups and X-rays can detect signs of suspected lung cancer, but many people do not do so, causing lung cancer to often only be detected when symptoms appear and at a late stage.

More than 70% of lung cancer patients are detected at a late stage.

"With breast cancer, currently 80 - 90% of patients coming for examination are detected in the early stages. But with lung cancer, most patients are diagnosed when the cancer has progressed, in the late stages," Dr. Nguyen Ba Tinh, Deputy Director of the Cancer Patient Support Fund - Bright Tomorrow, shared at the lung cancer screening held today, December 14, in Hung Yen.

Screening helps detect lung cancer risk early

Here, doctors from the Central Cancer Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, and Hanoi Oncology Hospital screened for lung cancer for about 500 residents in the Ecopark urban area (Hung Yen). The program was implemented by the Cancer Patient Support Fund and its partners.

Through screening and X-rays, doctors can detect warning signs of lung cancer. Suspected cases will continue to be transferred to specialized hospitals for low-dose CT scans, helping to detect early if diagnosed.

According to Mr. Tinh, currently more than 70% of lung cancer patients are still diagnosed with the disease at a late stage, reducing treatment effectiveness and increasing treatment costs.

Fear of illness causes loss of opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment

During the screening, the oncologist of the Central Cancer Hospital noted that although many people know that early detection of cancer will increase the success rate of treatment, there are still many cases where lung cancer is detected when the disease is already in its final stages.

According to experts, there are two reasons for the above cases. The first is that people's habit of regular health check-ups is still low, and they are not proactive in screening for diseases. Most people go to the hospital when they see that the symptoms of the disease become severe and cannot be treated at home. The fear of hospitals and medical examinations makes many people unable to detect lung cancer early.

In addition, the early symptoms of lung cancer are also quite difficult to recognize and are often confused with common diseases.

Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to some common symptoms of early stage lung cancer, including: persistent cough that gets worse; frequent chest pain; coughing up blood; difficulty breathing, stuffy nose, hoarseness; recurrent pneumonia and bronchitis; swelling of the face and neck; loss of appetite or weight loss; fatigue.
