Not long after her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, a 20-year-old girl (China) was suddenly diagnosed with colon cancer. Worried about her diet and lifestyle, the girl sought advice from nutritionist Xu Qiongyue (China).
Through investigation, the doctor learned that the girl's family often grilled meat three times a week, and they even used old tires as a grill. Even though the food was burnt, everyone still tried to eat it all.
Dr. Hua said that the mother and daughter’s cancer may be related to inhaling and eating toxic substances from grilling meat for a long time. Smoke from burning tires may contain carcinogens, and when grilling meat on old tires, these toxic gases will be emitted, directly harming health.
Dr. Hua warns that if food is burnt, you should absolutely not eat it. If you cannot throw it all away, at least remove the burnt part. In addition, not only eating burnt food but also inhaling polluted particles in the air when grilling meat also increases the risk of cancer. These particles also stick to clothes, hair and disperse in the surrounding space.
The best diet for colorectal cancer patients
According to nutrition experts, the best nutritional method for cancer patients in general and rectal cancer patients in particular should note the following:
- Each day, you should divide main meals into 6-8 small meals.
- Maintain adequate water intake according to the formula: body weight (kg) x 40 = number of ml needed to drink each day.
- You should eat a full range of food groups such as: fat, protein, starch, vitamins, etc.
- You should maintain physical activity and exercise for 15-30 minutes every day: the level, intensity and types of exercise should be chosen according to each patient, absolutely do not overexert yourself.
Relatives should prepare food to suit the patient's taste and depending on the stage of the disease.
Besides a nutritious diet, patients should try to stay optimistic and think positively, which is also an effective way to support cancer treatment.
What foods should rectal cancer patients avoid?
During treatment, rectal cancer patients should note:
- Grilled, fried, bacon, frozen, canned foods... are food groups that contain a lot of saturated fat, especially animal fat, which will make the patient's stomach difficult to digest. This will hinder the body's absorption of nutrients. Therefore, this food group should be limited as much as possible.
- Food for rectal cancer patients should be prioritized for simple preparation such as steaming or boiling. Avoid eating too much fat, fried foods, stir-fried foods...
- Limit foods high in sugar, especially do not drink carbonated drinks, drinks containing a lot of caffeine, beer, alcohol, cigarettes...
- In case of milk allergy, patients should not drink milk or dairy products to avoid nausea and diarrhea.
- For patients who have just had rectal cancer surgery, relatives should be careful not to let the patient eat foods that produce a lot of gas or that can easily cause infection. For example: beans, spicy, hot foods, fermented foods, cauliflower, pepper, raw vegetables, etc.
- In cases where the patient cannot eat normally or has digestive disorders, doctors will use intravenous feeding to provide adequate nutrients for the patient, helping to quickly recover health during treatment.
