These are the second and third kidney transplants performed at Can Tho Central General Hospital with professional support from Cho Ray Hospital.
Before that, both couples were fully prepared with procedures from expertise to legal basis, interdisciplinary consultation, and inter-hospital evaluation of specialties to conduct transplant surgery.
Male patient DVB, 28 years old, Hau Giang province, was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure in 2021, and has been undergoing regular dialysis at Hau Giang Provincial General Hospital. The patient has high blood pressure, stage III heart failure, severe mitral regurgitation, severe tricuspid regurgitation, severe pulmonary hypertension, acute pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and pleural effusion. This male patient also has anemia and malnutrition, which affects post-operative resuscitation.
Male patient DVB is currently in stable health after kidney transplant surgery. |
After 2 months of intensive medical treatment, the patient's heart failure, heart valve regurgitation, and pulmonary hypertension improved significantly. According to the spirit of inter-hospital consultation, the optimal treatment for the patient at this time is a kidney transplant and this is the most ideal time for kidney transplant surgery. The doctors decided to perform a kidney transplant surgery on the patient with the kidney donor, the patient's biological father.
The surgical team was led by Associate Professor, Dr. Thai Minh Sam (former Head of the Department of Urology - Cho Ray Hospital, Vice President of the Vietnam Urology - Nephrology Association) and more than 20 doctors from the two hospitals. The surgeon removed the donor's left kidney by laparoscopic method and transplanted it into the recipient's right iliac fossa.
After connecting the blood vessels, the kidney was red, and there was urine on the operating table. The ureter and bladder were connected, JJ catheter was placed, and the drainage next to the kidney was monitored. The surgery lasted 6 hours. The surgical team was happy to monitor the urine flowing from the recipient's transplanted kidney. During the surgery and resuscitation, the patient was prescribed 8 units of blood and blood products. After the transplant, the patient's paraclinical, cardiovascular, and respiratory indicators improved significantly, the surgical wound was dry, and the general condition recovered well.
The second case is a 38-year-old female PTKT patient in Kien Giang province, who was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure in March 2024 and is undergoing regular dialysis in Kien Giang. This female patient was subjected to the same professional procedure as the previous case.
The patient was consulted and decided to undergo kidney transplant surgery from a donor, his biological sister. The transplanted kidney was taken from the left side and transplanted into the right iliac fossa. The surgery was successful after 5 hours and 30 minutes. The patient was transferred to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for monitoring.
Currently, the health status of both donors and the two kidney transplant patients is stable, kidney function test results have returned to almost normal, and the patients are closely monitored by doctors after the transplant at the Nephrology - Artificial Kidney Department.
